Buyer's Guide
Building kitchen cabinets, bedroom cupboards, or bookshelves starts with choosing the right board. At Lumber King Stellenbosch we stock four board types that cover almost every cabinetry need, and understanding the difference between them is the first step to a clean, long-lasting build.
Supawood (MDF) is a dense, fine-grained board that machines beautifully and paints to a glass-smooth finish. It is the go-to choice for painted shaker doors, decorative panels, and routed details. Supawood holds screws well when pre-drilled, but it is heavy and must be sealed against moisture, so it is best for indoor, dry areas. For drawer fronts and cabinet doors that will be spray-painted, Supawood delivers the crispest profiles.
Melamine-faced board is the workhorse of built-in cabinetry. A melamine coating over a particleboard or MDF core gives a durable, wipe-clean surface that needs no finishing — ideal for carcase sides, shelving, and wardrobe interiors. It comes in wood-grain, white, and solid colour finishes, so you can match the interior to your doors without extra labour. The trade-off is that melamine chips if cut carelessly, which is why our precision cutting and edge-banding service saves you time and gives clean, factory-quality edges.
Hardwood boards like oak, walnut, and meranti bring warmth, strength, and natural character to visible parts of a build — solid door frames, open shelving, decorative cornices, and bench tops. Hardwood costs more and requires sanding and sealing, but nothing matches the grain and longevity of real timber. For traditional or transitional kitchens, a hardwood door or open shelf is worth the investment.
Hardware is what makes a cupboard feel expensive. Soft-close hinges and drawer runners stop slamming and extend the life of doors; quality handles and knobs set the style of the whole room; shelf pins and brackets keep shelving level under load. We stock a full range so you can finish every cabinet in one trip.
